01Officials
Become a referee in a single day
One day course, a written exam and you are qualified at grade three. No officiating experience needed, no charge and your first season is spent alongside an experienced mentor.
01How to qualify as a referee
Referees qualify through the England Roller Hockey grading scheme, which the association delivers locally. Everyone starts at grade three with a one day course and a written examination. No prior officiating experience is needed, just a season or two of playing or watching the game.
New grade three referees are appointed to under 11 and under 13 fixtures alongside an experienced mentor for their first season. Progression to grade two and grade one comes through assessed appointments at higher age groups.
Courses are free for members aged sixteen and over. Clubs are asked to put at least one candidate forward each season so appointments can be shared fairly across the calendar.
02Appointments
The Head Referee publishes appointments with the fixture list before each tournament weekend. Referees claim travel expenses from the association at the rate set at the annual general meeting. Availability is collected by email each month.
