Woodkirk School gets Roller Hockey
The photo to the right shows a group of students enjoying a Roller Hockey training session at an after-school club. The school enquired whether it was possible to run a taster session in June 2009 and this was run by the NRHA's National Coach, Carlos Amaral. From that the school decided to purchase some equipment to allow students to learn to play this fantastic game.
At the beginning of March the Northern Counties President Chris Freeman, started to run training sessions at the school to coach for 8 weeks. It is hoped that a nucleous of students can then help to form a school team. The school is already planning a second taster session for this June.
Other schools in the area are beginning to show interest in the sport of Roller Hockey and anyone wishing to enquire about participating in the School Partneship should contact president@ncrha.co.uk

Alf Scott - NCRHA Salutes You
Alf Scott, 80 years young and still serving as an active referee in the Northern Counties - what an achievement. The Roller Hockey World salutes you Alf.
Alf has both played and refereed for a very long number of years and has not only been an active referee, but mentored many others along the way. A job which he is still doing to this day and encouraging new referees with his wealth of wisdom.
At the tournament at Arcadia, Manchester, on 28th March, Alf was honoured with presentations from the Manchester Club, Chris Freeman, NCRHA President and Keith Allen, NRHA President. The Manchester Club presented him with two fine cut glass whiskey tumblers and the Club's youngest player presented him with a bottle of something nice! Chris, who was mentored as a referee by both Alf and George Martin, presented Alf with a very special Cock O' the North Trophy bearing Alf's name, so that future generations will always know about this wonderful chap. Keith, on behalf of the NRHA, honoured Alf with a silver platter in recognition of his contribution to English Roller Hockey.

It is with great sadness that the Manchester Roller Hockey Club has to announce the death of their beloved President, Graham Woodhead, who passed away on the 29th of December 2009 peacefully in hospital, with his two daughters Heather and Sharon at his side. He leaves behind his wife Jenny and grandchildren, Aiden, Megan, Estefania, Ruben & Joel.
Graham will long be remembered for his willingness to always be available to assist in anyway or form he could with the new generation and future hockey players of England. He took the role of Club President about 5 years ago, but has been involved in Roller Hockey for much, much longer.
His funeral will take place on the 08/01/2010 in Saint Peters Church in Levenshulme, Stockport Road, Manchester M19 3BS at 14.00 hrs.
Church doors will be open to the public and friends wishing to say goodbye and pay their respects will be most welcome.
As a mark of respect, it would be a very nice gesture to have a moment of silence at any forthcoming games in January.
Kind regards
Chris Freeman

Want to be on TV
CBBC are looking for kids to take part in a new show about roller skating and it would be great if some of the kids from your club apply to be on the show. The programme is a new series for CBBC about roller skating kids so we’re hoping some of the kids from your club might submit an entry form.
Here’s a brief synopsis of the show:
It is a 10-part reality TV show with teams of roller skating kids. The teams must be made up of 3 kids plus one adult who must be related to one of the team members. Teams will be mentored/trained over a number of weeks by experts in the field. Each week there will be a challenge as well as a performance of their improved skills.
Attached is a flyer for the show that you can print out and distribute amongst the kids (and adults) at your club. Please urge them to visit the cbbc website for more details and to enter a team as soon as possible as the deadline for submissions is the 30th of January. Remember though, the sooner they get their application form in, the sooner they will hear if they have been given an audition giving them more time to prepare. Here’s a link to the site:

Well done Derek!
Summer school Monjus Spain 2009:26th-31stJuly
During the summer of 2008 and Eight I had the pleasure of taking some of the Manchester club players and parents to a summer school organised by Andrew Ashurst and the Monjus Club ( 45 mins from Barcelona by train.)
We stayed at a local hotel run by Paco and in thirty years of being involved with summer schools I have to say the facilities and services offer by the hotel are the best I have ever experienced.
Each room had full air conditioning, simple continental breakfast but lunch and evening meal was a three course meal with a choice of 3 or 4 dishes.
Very little food ever went back on a plate after the meals were served up. Which has to be taken as praise indeed from our fast food generation?
The hotel can accommodate 90 people, and clients have free use of the municipal swimming pool which is next door to the hotel.
The summer school itself the school will start on Sunday 26th July
And finish on Friday 31st July.
The hotel is reserved from Saturday 25th July and we have rooms provisionally reserved till Sunday 2nd of August.
What are the costs?
Hotel rooms are 45 euro per person per night full board.
Hockey school 6 days @ 180 euros (30 euros a day.)
A deposit of £50 is required per family before the 25th January
(This is based on £1 = 1-20 euros £50 = 60 euro and will be deducted from the summer school fee of 180 euros)
The summer school has to be paid for in cash deposit in £ and the balance in Euros.
The hotel can be paid for with a credit card when you arrive at the hotel if you choose.
Total costs 7 nights = 315 euro 8 nights 360 euros plus 180 euro if you are doing the summer school.
Additional costs. I your flight to Barcelona and train fare to Monjus under 10 euros.

Paul Colton, Yazmin's coach said "This is a great achievement for Yazmin, she works really hard in training and has rightly earned her place in the team".
Dave Fothergill, Middlesbrough and England U19's coach said, "Beth and Chloe have been working extremely hard. The have shown great commitment and ability to make it in to this team and they are both really looking forward to it".

Middlesbrough Roller Hockey Club On Setanta
After a disappointing weekend away in Germany, Boro’s sprits were lifted on Monday afternoon when Setanta Sports contacted Daniel Palmer stating that they want to film the hockey club playing a little bit of roller hockey and interview players about the sport.
Setanta wanted to make a promotional news video about our sport and link it with the coverage of the Middlesbrough Vs Blackburn game this weekend live on Setanta Sport. The news video should be appearing on Setanta Sports News Channel through out Fraday and Saturday.
Due to the late notice the filming took place at Whitcliffmount Sports Centre on Tuesday as the reporter was in Leeds and would not be able to make it up to Middlesbrough.
Thank you to all the players that help out with the Video hope to see you on television.

Cock'o'North Returns!!
The COCK'O'NORTH roller hockey challenge cup competition comes home. The competition was originally devised by JERRY TROTT well remembered in the community as a local businessman and president of the roller hockey accociation. When Jerry sold up his business and retired abroad it lead to the gradual demise of the sport in the the area.Well thanks to the enthusiasum of Danny Messenger and the support and interest by the staff and pupils at whitcliffe mount school and sports centre roller hockey is once more thriving in the borough, so it is only fitting that we celebrate the fortieth aniverary of this competion which brings together the regions top two sides. MIDDLESBOROUGH and MANCHESTER. The two sides have already met once this season when they produced and icredibly exciting match with middlesboro equalising and ten winning the game by 12-11 in the last 30 seconds.should the teams be able to repeat this then we are in for a very exciting evening. after the game the teams players are going to provide some one on one training with local players MIDDLESBOROUGH currently have six players who are part the ENGLAND national senior and junior teams whilst MANCHESTER have players from France and Spain so were sure of some expert tution. They also have one local player Darrren Whitley who transfered from the Halifax club in the hope that he will become the first choice goalkeeper for them. Cock'o'north cup final Middlesborough v manchester Saturday 8th NOVEMBER

Chris Freeman President NCRHA Statement
Many of you will now be aware of the recently launched Whitcliffe Mount Roller Hockey Academy. It even has its own website running. www.wmrha.co.uk It’s certainly worth a look.
This week, and for one week only, Carlos Amaral, National Coach, is running Roller Hockey PE sessions at the Whitcliffe Mount School, Cleckheaton. This will introduce Roller Hockey to about 500 pupils at the school and could become the basis for a new club to be set up. Carlos is literally taking over all of the PE lessons and the first day went especially well. About 15 PE teachers, from the whole of the Kirklees area, attended a special 3 hours session during the evening to learn what Roller Hockey is all about. I think that this statement, from one of the PE teachers, just about sums up the whole evening session, “I’m absolutely hopeless, but I’m having fun!”
The Academy, which is the brainchild of Danny Messenger, will become the Centre for Excellence in the northern area. Regional Training sessions are already being held there and a great success they are too. We need you to support the work at Whitcliffe because we should be able to create not only a new club, but form a much, much stronger NCRHA Regional Squad as a result of the excellent training facilities.
